According to European Toner and Inkjet Remanufacturers Association (ETIRA),  DIN is short for Deutsche Industrie Norm, the worldwide renowned German institute for standardization. DIN 33870 Information technology; Office machines – Requirements and tests for the preparation of refilled toner modules for electrophotographical printers, copiers and facsimile machines.  It specifies quality characteristics and functions of the refilled printer modules, describes the verification of print quality, and defines minimum requirements for ensuring consistent print quality and trouble-free functioning throughout the product's life.  This technical specification provides a basis for assessing refilled printer modules taking aspects of environmental protection and sustainability into consideration.
